![]() ![]() She has eight arms, making her an octopus gem, and streaks of orange through her hair and body, reminiscent of molten magma (as obsidian is a volcanic rock). Obsidian is the largest fusion to date, surpassing even Alexandrite in her size. While an Obsidian fusion has been implied before with Rose Quartz (it can be seen carved into the cliff near Steven’s house), this is the first time it’s ever been shown in the flesh. So they do, and this is the result – Obsidian. However, the big twist of the episode was this – in their battle against the Diamonds, Steven and the Crystal Gems decide they all need to fuse together to take on something that’s a lot bigger and stronger than them. They also wear Steven’s shirt under theirs, as opposed to over it as the old form did. Smoky’s new form lacks the stars seen on their old one, and they now don’t wear leggings under their shorts. In my previous drawing of them, I’d forgotten that Smoky has an extra arm (usually hidden behind their back), so it’s included here. ![]() Steven fusing with Amethyst makes Smoky Quartz, and their appearance has changed to match with Amethyst’s new form as well. While this one isn’t really a new fusion, it does have a new look. In another possible Mary Poppins reference, he has a British accent, though he obviously isn’t the first SU character to have this – Garnet’s voice actor, Estelle, is British, as is her related fusion Sardonyx. However, the ‘new’ Rainbow is a lot different from the ‘old’ one, in that he is notably the first-ever male Gem, or at least one who uses male gender pronouns – and he also has a voice! His ‘weapon’ is an umbrella, which he can use to fly and float around with, much like Mary Poppins (who the fandom have often compared him to). The 2.0 refers to the fact that this is the second Rainbow Quartz that has appeared on the show, after the first one with Rose Quartz – Steven’s mother – and Pearl. ![]() Possibly the most fun of all the new Steven-and-Crystal Gem fusions, Rainbow Quartz 2.0 is what happens when Steven fuses with Pearl. She could be a combination of Steven’s playfulness and Garnet’s serious and cool demeanour. She takes much of her personality from 1980s and 1990s cartoon characters, who often gave messages to children about things like strangers, drugs and road safety. When Steven and Garnet fuse, they make Sunstone, whose face is a literal sun with sunglasses. Sunstone’s FusionĬYM had Steven fusing with all three Crystal Gems, some turning out a little different from what you might expect. This time, it’s the turn of all the new (and old) fusions seen in the season five finale, Change Your Mind. With less than a week to go before the release of Steven Universe: The Movie, my fanart celebration continues. ![]()
